Kristen Mahoney, MA, LPC
Licensed in Virginia and Washington, DC

About Me
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor and Clinical Supervisor based in Northern Virginia, and I provide fully virtual therapy to adult women across Virginia and Washington, DC. I came to this work after an earlier career in sales and marketing. Feeling deeply drawn to the field of psychology, I made a career shift and went on to earn my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I’ve been in practice ever since, and there’s nothing I’d rather be doing!
Outside of therapy, I try to practice what I preach. Mindfulness, yoga, and joyful movement - like walking, strength training, hiking, or the occasional run - help me stay grounded and connected to myself. I enjoy being outside as much as possible, catching live shows and concerts, and cheering on DC sports teams (even with their hit-or-miss records). I also value time with my husband, son, and close friends. Having grown up in Northern Virginia, I understand firsthand the stressors of life in the DC metro area and am passionate about helping women find space to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most.
Experience & Training
I began my clinical career focused on eating disorders and have worked across every level of care, including outpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), and inpatient settings. I later worked at a comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) practice where I served as Assistant Clinical Director, providing supervision and support to master’s-level clinicians and helping oversee clinical care.
Before starting Women’s Therapy & Wellness, I supported military families and students in the school setting, which helped me understand the unique emotional toll of transitions, caregiving, and systemic stress.
To best support women throughout their reproductive lifespan, I’ve pursued specialized training in reproductive mental health, including infertility, pregnancy loss, postpartum concerns, perimenopause, and menopause. While I’ve always taken a trauma-informed approach, I’ve deepened this work through EMDR training and continue to expand my skills to better support the specific needs of the women I serve.
Therapeutic Approach
I offer warm, validating, and collaborative therapy grounded in a deep curiosity about how each client makes sense of their world. While I want you to feel safe and understood in our work together, I’ll also be direct when needed, helping you break free from the patterns that hold you back.
I take an eclectic approach and integrate a variety of evidence-based modalities based on your unique needs, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and parts work. I also bring in psychoeducation to help you better understand what’s happening in both your mind and body - especially when navigating anxiety, trauma, or hormonal changes. I value a mind-body approach and often incorporate somatic awareness to help you tune into your internal experience, build self-trust, and regulate your nervous system.
